About the orchard

Frank and Bernice Aguilar started the 50-acre Penryn farm after marrying in 1947, on land with citrus trees planted in the 1880s by Welsh settlers, and converted it to a 20-acre mandarin orchard by the late 1960s.

The family replanted after a 1972 freeze; son Tom Aguilar now runs it, and the orchard says it was the first 100% solar-powered mandarin orchard in Northern California.
